19th September

1960 : Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan was signed.

1965 : American astronaut Sunita Williams, the second Indian-origin woman to go into space, was born.

1983 : Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis gains its independence from England. It is an island nation in the Caribbeans, it is the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere, in both area and population.

1938 : Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (10th Aug 1866 – 19th Sept 1936) passed away. He is the musicologist who composed modern Hindusthani Classical Music. Earlier Raga was classified as Raag, Ragini, Putra Ragas etc. he reclassified them into the currently used Thaat system. He composed several Bandishes.

2000 : Karnam Malleswari won the Olympic bronze medal for weight-lifting. She is the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics.
