1932 – Iraq gained  independence from the United Kingdom.
 
1977 – Former Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi was arrested on charges of corruption.
 
1989 – His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) was awarded the prestigious  Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution towards humanity.
 
1990 – After four-decade of the cold war situation, German Reunification started. Berlin was reunited as a single city and was made the capital of unified Germany.
 
1992 – Padma Shri and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee Sri. Geet Siriram Sethi won the 1992 World Professional Billiards Championship. He won the title again four times — in 1993, 1995, 1998, and 2006.
