1922  – One of the greatest filmmakers of Indian cinema Sri. Hrishikesh Mukherjee (30 September 1922 – 27 August 2006) was born. He was chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). He was honored with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, Padma Vibhushan in 2001 and he also won eight Filmfare Awards.
 
1966 – Bechuanaland declares its independence, and becomes the Republic of Botswana.
 
1993 – Early on the morning of 30th September, at 3.56 am a massive earthquake took place in Central India. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Killari in the Latur district of Maharashtra. The impact was felt most in Latur and Osmanabad districts and it killed more than 9000 people and 30000 got injured.
 
1996 – Capital city of Tamil Nadu, Madras was renamed to Chennai.
 
2001 – Veteran Congress leader and Maharaja of Gwalior Sri. Madhav Rao Scindia  (10 March 1945 – 30 September 2001) died in an air crash in Mainpuri district Uttar Pradesh.
