Stockholm Syndrome

Stockholm Syndrome

In the year 1973 on Aug 23rd a person called Jan-Eric Olsson kidnapped four employees of a bank it was an attempt of robbery this is known to us as Norrmalmstorg robbery in Kreditbanken Bank. Norrmalmstorg Robbery as the bank was in Norrmalmstorg Square is Stockholm capital of Sweden.
This attempted robbery turned into a hostage crisis when Jan-Eric Olsson, a convicted criminal on leave from prison, held up a bank, taking four hostages. Swedish police were called in immediately, two of them went inside, and Olsson opened fire, injuring the hand of Ingemar Warpefeldt, one of the policemen. The other was ordered to sit in a chair and “sing something”; he started singing “Lonesome Cowboy”.Olsson then took four people as hostages. He demanded his friend Clark Olofsson be brought there, along with 3 million Swedish kronor, two guns, bulletproof vests, helmets, and a fast car. Olofsson was a repeat offender who had committed several armed robberies and acts of violence, the first committed at the age of 16.

The drama kept on for six days, Jan-Eric Olsson held all of the four hostages for six days in banks locker itself. Eventually, forceful police intervention ended the hostage drama and Olsson got arrested and all hostages were freed.
But in the process of court proceedings, all of the hostages denied from testifying against Olsson. Moreover, they all categorically visited Olsson regularly during his entire punishment period. This is the scenario of a weird attraction between the Tormentor and the Tormented is termed as Stockholm syndrome by the psychologists around the world. Who has never been able to understand the reasons of this abnormal human behavior?
But actually, it was not the first time this behavior is noticed, actually in India our land the whole country is suffering from the same syndrome prior to that it actually noticed it till then. Otherwise, the world would have termed the same by the name of Bihar India or Nalanda syndrome.
Bihar Magadha this part of the country is so rich and diverse that it was kind of the center of the worlds at some point in time. Bihar has seen glory since ages. Birth of religion, Glorious Rulers, huge armies, beautiful landscape, enriched culture greatest of philosophers, extraordinary teachers and biggest of universities.

The earliest existence of Magadha is recorded in Vedic texts much earlier in time than 600 BC. Its existence can be witnessed in Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bihar can be found by the name of Mithila and Magadha. The earliest reference to the Magadha people occurs in the Atharvaveda. The core of the kingdom area of Bihar was along the Ganges; its first capital was Rajagriha, (Now Rajgir) then shifted to Patliputra (Now Patna). From the Princess of Mithila Sita to King Jarasandh Bidushar Ajatashatru and Emperor Chandragupta Maurya and Asok all is Bihar.
The ancient kingdom of Magadha is heavily mentioned in Vedic time texts and in Jainism and Buddhist texts. It is also mentioned in the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the Puranas. Other then Nanda Empire, Mauryan Empire, and Gupta Empire, both of which originated in Magadha. It saw advancements in ancient India’s science, mathematics, astronomy, religion, and philosophy and were considered the Golden Age of India. The Magadha kingdom included republican communities’ functions even.

Amongst all of this empire trade and glories, Magadha was the educational capital of the world on its own time.
Aryabhatta, Chanakaya, Atish Dipankar Srijnana were some of who graced this land.
It was Bihar only where you have two biggest of the university Nalanda and Vikramshila(It was founded during Pala Dynasty and modeled over Nalanda.) Although ancient scripts suggest them by the name of Mahavihara
The name of Nalanda is composed of two words Nalam and Da, Nalam means Lotus (Means Cognizance and wisdom as per Hindu and Buddhist Text) Da means (One who gives). Together it means one who gives Wisdom.
This university or Mahavihara was founded by Kumargupta –I of Gupta Dynasty in 413-455 BC. The famous Chinese traveler and philosopher Hiuen Tsang had written vivid and extensive details of the Mahavihara in his travelogue during his visit of 2 years. After his return, many more including Yijing visited who stayed for 14 years here educating himself. This University had a huge library called Dhramaganj
Dharmaganja which comprised three large multi-storied buildings, the Ratnasagara (Ocean of Jewels), the Ratnodadhi (Sea of Jewels), and the Ratnaranjaka (Jewel-adorned). Ratnodadhi was nine stories high and housed the most sacred manuscripts including the Prajnaparamita Sutra and the Guhyasamaja

There were some10,000 student and teacher lived at a time educating several subjects of religion as Mahayana and Heenayana Buddhism, Sanatan Dharma, Vedic Studies Buddhist Tripitaka of Vinay, Sootra and Abhidhamma and many there regions of the world.

Apart from the religion, they study Ayurveda (Indian ancient medicine ) Arthashastra (Economics), Rajniti (Political Science) Bhigyan (Science) Ganith (Mathematics) Bhugol (Geography), Jyotish (Astrology) many more.

There used to be students from many parts of the world around who came and get enlightened here.
As in this mortal world everything has an end Nalanda Mahavihara also ended but they faced a very cruel and unfortunate ending. They were Attacked Lambasted, slaughtered decimated Looted Brunt and Demolished all these atrocities just for being peaceful. All this richness of culture and education and civilization end with act cruelty where a tormentor came from a different land and tormented a peaceful bunch of students and teachers killed burnt while they unarmed student and teachers, and left with some ashes and ruins. They say the grand library only here burnt for at least three months.
All of this was done in command of a person called Mohammad Bin Bakhtiyar Khilji a religious fanatic and cruel Afgan military leader. This Mohammad Bin Bakhtiyar Khilji was also responsible for the destruction of many other Buddhist monasteries including Mahavihara of Vikramshila. Thereafter he turns to Bengal and destroyed then cities Nabadwip and Gour and Bengal.
Detail report of the demolition of Nalanda Mahavihara is recorded in the book name Tabqat – E – Nasiri by Minhaj-Us-Siraj
Killing and destroying burning books and hindering education vandalizing education institutions are some of the first and foremost things which terrorism and radicalism do and they did this since ages in all over the world latest example will be Taliban and ISIS probably. Remember Bamiyan Buddha Saute and its demolition by Taliban, or a very recent when ISIS captured and sacked Mosul in Iraq first thing they did was burning of the library with its 8000 books.

This is the fact that relates us with this Stockholm Syndrome were, a fanatic military raider who almost wiped out entire Buddhist culture and education system from India and we have an entire town named after him. The town is called Bakhtiyarpur which comes under Patna district and very important railway junction stations. This town is 40 KM away from the ruins of Nalanda University. If any of us want to visit the site of the ruined Mahavihara we have to go via Bakhtiyarpur Jn only. I find this wired contemptible and obnoxious when a man is being glorified for decades just for sake of appeasement politics or vote bank. In the name secularism, we glorified mass murderers named roads after them from Aurengazeb to Tughlak none left.
Since independence pseudo secular politicians and left inclined educationists, as well as historian, actually had made INDIA the epicenter of the Stockholm Syndrome and Nalanda probably the most shameful example.
