Mysterious death of student draws protest in Visva Bharati

The mysterious death of a class XII student sent shockwaves across Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan on Thursday. Family members took to protest in front of Visva Bharati hospital alleging murder of their son. Authorities opposed the protest with all available police forces, special services and the army.  The incident has caused a stir in the Visva-Bharati campus.

The body of Asim Das was recovered from Visva-Bharati's Uttarshiksha dormitory around 8 am. After receiving the information from classmates, the warden and security guards of the dormitory took Das to Visva-Bharati's own Pearson Memorial Hospital.

The doctors declared the student dead. Upon receiving news, Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Vidyut Chakraborty went to the spot. Other students were terrified after the suicide incident in the dormitory.

According to varsity sources, Das’ house is in Banagram under Nanur police jurisdiction. He stayed in the dormitory for studies.

The police are also confused about the cause of death of the student.

The student's family claimed that they rushed to the Visva-Bharati campus as soon as they got the news of the boy's admission to the hospital. They came to the hospital and found out that their son was dead.

The parents are reluctant to believe that their son could commit suicide. The deceased student’s father, Sanjeev Das, said, "I spoke to him over the phone on Wednesday night. There was no abnormality then. So how can he commit suicide? He has been killed." They also alleged that hostel students and warden were involved in the incident.

The body was later taken to Bolpur Sub-Divisional Hospital for post mortem. It is alleged, authorities at the Pearson Memorial Hospital were not cooperating with the family of the deceased student.

The family of the deceased complained that how was the death certificate issued before their arrival?

They even got into a scuffle with the security personnel of Visva-Bharati.

Later, Sanjeev Das went to meet the vice-chancellor at his residence. However, the vice-chancellor did not meet him. After that the protest started. The student's father lodged a written complaint against the Visva-Bharati authorities at the Santiniketan police station

Visva-Bharati's acting public relations officer Mahua Banerjee declined to comment on the matter.
