1913 - Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel disappeared from a ship in English channel (18th March 1858 – 29th September 1913).He was a Germen mechanical engineer, scientist and namesake of his own invention the diesel engine.
1959 - Arati Saha, aged 19, became the first Asian woman to swim across the English Channel.
