1910 – Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter Sri. Batukeshwar Dutt was born (18 November 1910–20 July 1965). He is best known for having exploded bombs, along with Bhagat Singh, in the Central Legislative Assembly in New Delhi on 8 April 1929.
 
1956 - Morocco gained independence.
 
1971 – Oman declared its independence from the United Kingdom.
 
1972 – The Royal Bengal Tiger was chosen as the national animal of India.
 
2013 - US space agency NASA sent Maven to orbit Mars.
