Decendants of Nawab family are in civic poll battle

Ward 10 of Murshidabad municipality has drawn the attention of political observers as all the mainstream political parties have filed candidates from the descendants of the Nawab family. Here the untouchability for the so- called myth of 'Mir Jafar' has vanished as Trinamool Congress, BJP and Congress have chosen candidates from the Nawab family forgetting the fact that political leaders do not hesitate to brand his rival as 'Mir Jafar' to describe him as a 'Gaddar'.

Apart from that the descendents of the Nawab family have set up an example of 'ideal candidate' as none of the candidates used unparliamentary language or indulge in personal attack thus keeping personal relationship intact. They are fighting with 'political ideology' though.

Interestingly, Congress candidate, Syed Waquar Abbas Meerja, and his cousin Trinamool Congress candidate, Syed Mohammed Fahim Meerza, stay in the same building near Dakshin Darwaja, ground floor and first floor respectively. Both of them are campaigning for civic polls throughout the day and do not forget to talk to each other with a gentle smile or offer a cup of tea.

Even, Shabbir Hossain, son of maternal aunt with Nawabi heredity, living at Kella Nijamot area have become BJP candidates, who rushed to meet 'boro masi' Rukshana Begum , who is the mother of his rival Fahim to seek blessings just after filing nomination. Apart from mainstream political parties, ex- councillor Syed Ashyana Begum, daughter of Syed Wazahat Meerza, is also contesting as an independent candidate for the same ward after Trinamool refused her a ticket. Another descendant from the Nawab family, Husna Begum (Sania), is also fighting as an independent candidate from the same ward.

What is the reason behind such a battle within the Nawabi family and political parties forgetting the 'untouchability' for Mir Jafar descendents? Trinamool candidate and head teacher of one primary school, S M Fahim Meerza, said, “Obviously there are 1,580 votes in two booths 119 and 120 where there are 65 to 70% and 10 to 15% voters are related to the Nawab family respectively. Naturally, the Nawab family votes are the big factor here. But, we are fighting with political ideology here. Nobody is attempting personal attack. Shabbir had met with my mother as his boro masi after filing nomination, my first destination was to meet my masi Afsana Begum, mother of Fahim. Though, Fahim is one of the rivals among five in civic polls as a BJP candidate, I did not forget to seek votes after they sweetened me.”

He added: “I am campaigning for the development works of our government as well as the previous Trinamool run civic board.” Congress candidate and former guest 'Urdu' lecturer of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Centenary College added, “We have no problem in personal relationship as we consider it a political fight. So, we are campaigning for people with our own ideology. I am getting advantage as Congress had announced my name as candidate of Ward 10 two years ago. I am saying to everybody, all of you know all of us six candidates are good. It's your duty to choose the best from us. If you want to continue the cut money culture or increase the problem of unemployment you may vote for Trinamool and if you support the religious division policy may cast your votes for BJP candidate. But, you must vote for me if you want true development shown in 2000, the year Congress snatched the board from the Left Front.”

BJP candidate Shabbir Hossain explained, “There is no necessity of personal attack for any election campaign as there are so many issues. Both Congress and Trinamool are trying to brand our party as BJP creates division with religious identity. I am asking if the Prime Minister has issued any order to deprive anybody from Abas Yojana or other schemes with religious identity? Not only that, Trinamool leaders claim that they have done enough for the minority community, in true sense what they did? Is Imam Bhata is an indicator of muslim development? Is there a reservation in government jobs for Muslims?' All trios are the new candidates in the poll battle. Ex- councillor Ashyana Begum, independent candidate said, “I was elected as a Left Front backed independent candidate in 2015, then I switched to Trinamool in 2017 with the chairman and other councillors. I had no intention to fight this time as I was shocked when the party declined me ticket.  But local residents who have benefited from me in the last 5 to 7 years advised me to fight and I filed my nomination.  I am campaigning alone and as a social worker I can enter any family's kitchen.”
