Vietnam Boat Accident

A holiday turned into tragedy off the coast of Vietnam this weekend after a speedboat carrying a large group of Indian tourists capsized near Phu Quoc Island, leaving 15 people dead. The accident, which occurred on Saturday, July 11, 2026, has triggered a swift government response, a criminal investigation, and a temporary suspension of speedboat tours in the area.

The mortal remains of the 15 Indian nationals who tragically passed away in yesterday’s boat accident are being transported to Ho Chi Minh City and will reach there by this evening.

After completion of formalities at Ho Chi Minh the mortal remains would be transported to India…

Here’s a complete, updated breakdown of the Vietnam boat accident — what happened, who was on board, the rescue operation, and what authorities are doing next.

What Happened Off Phu Quoc Island

The speedboat was carrying 32 Indian tourists along with four Vietnamese crew members — 36 people in total — when it overturned less than half a kilometer from shore. The vessel had just departed from Hon May Rut Ngoai islet, a small island near Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island and a popular beach destination for international travelers.

The boat capsized shortly after leaving the islet on Saturday afternoon, local authorities said.

Eyewitness Account: A Race Against Rough Seas

Ha Van Loc, who was piloting a nearby boat at the time, told Vietnamese state broadcaster VN Express that he first spotted the capsized vessel around 12:40 p.m. local time. He described seeing roughly a dozen people clinging to the overturned hull, while several others — none wearing life jackets — were struggling in open water.

Loc said rough seas made it too dangerous to steer his own boat close to the wreck, fearing his propeller could injure swimmers nearby. Instead, he and his crew threw rope-tied life buoys into the water and managed to pull four survivors aboard within about ten minutes. Realizing more people were still trapped, he alerted nearby boat operators, and within minutes nearly a dozen additional boats and rescue teams had joined the operation.

Waves reportedly reaching up to 10 feet made the rescue extremely difficult. Jet skis proved more effective than larger vessels at reaching stranded swimmers, ferrying survivors ashore one at a time.

Death Toll and Injured Survivors

At least 15 people were confirmed dead in the accident, with Indian nationals accounting for the fatalities. According to Vietnamese newspaper Tuoi Tre, citing local police, 21 people were taken to hospital for emergency treatment, two of whom were in critical condition.

By Sunday, 16 survivors had reportedly been discharged from hospital and were preparing to return to India, according to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Hanoi.

Vietnamese authorities moved quickly in the aftermath of the disaster. Police detained the boat’s captain, identified as 57-year-old Nguyen Hong Hai, on Sunday. He is under investigation for alleged violations of waterway transport safety regulations, according to state media.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister ordered a full investigation into the cause of the accident and directed authorities to hold those responsible accountable, local media reported.

Speedboat Tours Suspended Near Phu Quoc

In the wake of the accident, speedboat tours to the nearby An Thoi Archipelago — a popular cluster of islands off Phu Quoc — were temporarily suspended. Local tour operators and authorities said services would only resume once weather conditions improve enough to guarantee visitor safety.

India’s Embassy Responds

India’s embassy in Vietnam confirmed that the capsized boat had been carrying several Indian tourists but said exact details of the incident were still being confirmed at the time. The embassy has been coordinating with local authorities to support victims’ families and assist survivors with their return home.

Why Phu Quoc Is a Popular Destination for Indian Tourists

Phu Quoc has seen a sharp rise in visitors from India in recent years, driven largely by an expanding network of direct flights connecting major Indian and Vietnamese cities, along with Vietnam’s traveler-friendly e-visa policy. The island, known for its beaches, coral reefs, and resorts, has become one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing tourism hubs — making this accident especially alarming for the region’s booming travel industry.

What’s Next

Vietnamese officials have signaled that the investigation will examine whether safety protocols — including passenger capacity limits and the availability of life jackets — were followed. Authorities have also flagged weather conditions as a likely contributing factor, given the rough seas reported at the time of the capsizing. Updates on the death toll, survivor status, and the investigation are expected in the coming days.

Details, including the official death toll and investigation findings, may be updated as Vietnamese and Indian authorities release further information.
