Entrepreneur and mental-health advocate Ananya Birla travelled to flood-affected Assam this week, personally delivering donations gathered for relief work and touring some of the worst-hit areas to see the situation firsthand.

The Visit

Birla arrived in Assam with her team to hand over donations that had been collected for ongoing relief efforts and to assess conditions on the ground. The trip took place while relief operations were already underway across several flood-hit areas, with workers focused on getting essential supplies to the people who need them most.

According to reports from the visit, Birla’s team is expected to help coordinate how the relief material gets distributed and to work alongside those already supporting affected communities. She said the trip was about delivering the donations collected by her and her team and seeing conditions on the ground for herself, and she thanked everyone who had contributed, noting that their support was making a real difference.

The relief effort came together through contributions from donors and well-wishers who joined forces to help people affected by the floods, and Birla’s team is expected to meet with relief workers and volunteers on the ground to better understand urgent needs so aid reaches the people who require it most.

Her visit follows a string of high-profile contributions to Assam’s flood relief fund in recent days — industrialist Sajjan Jindal, for instance, recently pledged ₹5 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund amid the crisis.

The Scale of the Crisis

Ananya Birla’s visit comes amid one of Assam’s most severe monsoon disasters in years. Since late June 2026, relentless monsoon rains have triggered flash floods and landslides across the state, with the Jonai sub-division of Dhemaji district among the worst affected. Thousands of families — including more than 2,100 children — have lost their homes and are now without shelter, food, or safe drinking water.

Aid groups have mobilised across the state in response. The Akshaya Patra Foundation, for example, has been cooking and delivering hot meals to displaced families from its Jorhat kitchen since late July, at the request of local district administrations, while other organisations, including the Assam Foundation of North America, have been raising emergency funds to supply groceries and essential goods to communities in Upper Assam.

Who Is Ananya Birla

Ananya Birla, born in 1994, is the eldest daughter of industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and a sixth-generation member of the Birla business family. She sits on the boards of Aditya Birla Group companies, including Grasim Industries and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, where she has a hand in the group’s digital and consumer businesses. Alongside her corporate role, she has built a career as a pop artist and is known for her advocacy work in mental health.

After studying at Oxford, she returned to India and, together with her mother, founded Mpower, a mental-health initiative aimed at reducing the stigma around mental illness in India — a cause she has continued to champion publicly alongside her business and philanthropic work.

Her trip to Assam this week adds to a growing list of private citizens and organisations — from corporate donors to grassroots NGOs — stepping in to support relief efforts as the state continues to grapple with widespread flooding.
