Who Is Bittu Tabahi? The 20-Year-Old Cleaning a River Alone — And Winning Hearts Worldwide

In a small town called Biaora in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district, a 20-year-old college student is proving that real change doesn’t need a crowd — just one person who refuses to give up. His name is Surendra Singh Choudhary, but the internet knows him as Bittu Tabahi, and his story has gone from local mockery to national — and now international — recognition.

Who Is Bittu Tabahi?

Bittu Tabahi is a 20-year-old BSc student from Biaora, a town in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district. Since Republic Day (January 26) this year, he has spent months single-handedly cleaning the heavily polluted Ajnar River, pulling out plastic waste, garbage, and algae by hand — using little more than basic tools and around ₹30,000 of his own savings.

His hometown holds historical and local significance, and the Ajnar River had become choked with waste over the years. Instead of waiting for a government cleanup drive, Bittu decided to step into the water himself.

From Ridicule to Recognition

Bittu’s journey wasn’t easy in the beginning. He faced criticism and mockery online, with people calling him “crazy” for wading into filthy water day after day. He even developed health issues from prolonged exposure to the polluted river. Some people mocked him further by asking him to come clean their household drains.

But Bittu didn’t stop. His persistence — documented through before-and-after photos shared on social media — slowly turned public opinion in his favor, and his story began to spread.

Praise From Anand Mahindra and Kevin Pietersen

As Bittu’s dedication gained visibility online, some of India’s most recognizable names took notice:

  • Anand Mahindra, the billionaire industrialist, publicly praised Bittu on social media, calling him his “#MondayMotivation” and noting that if the desire for social media “likes” could be turned into a force for good, that was a welcome trade-off.
  • Kevin Pietersen, the former England cricket captain, called Bittu’s efforts heroic and said they deserved international recognition.

A Personal Meeting With MP CM Mohan Yadav

Bittu’s efforts eventually reached the state’s top office. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav invited him to his official residence in Bhopal, where he personally felicitated the young river warrior.

Sharing the meeting on social media, CM Yadav praised Bittu’s determination, saying his work proves that meaningful change doesn’t require a large crowd — sometimes, one sincere effort is enough to make a difference. The CM also linked Bittu’s initiative to the state’s Jal Ganga Samvardhan Campaign, a public participation program focused on protecting and reviving water bodies across Madhya Pradesh.

Job Offer From The Ocean Cleanup Founder Boyan Slat

Perhaps the most remarkable turn in Bittu’s story came from thousands of miles away. Boyan Slat, founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup — a Netherlands-based organization dedicated to removing plastic pollution from oceans and rivers — came across a viral post about Bittu’s solo cleanup efforts.

Slat’s response was short and direct: “Come work for us.”

The Ocean Cleanup develops and scales technology solutions to tackle plastic pollution at a global level, and an invitation from its founder marks a major milestone for a young man who started out with nothing but a pair of hands and a determination to fix his local river.

Why Bittu Tabahi’s Story Matters

Bittu Tabahi’s journey — from being mocked as “crazy” to being personally honored by a Chief Minister and headhunted by a global environmental organization — is a powerful reminder that individual action still matters. In an age often criticized for rewarding trivial content over meaningful work, Bittu’s story shows that consistency and genuine intent can eventually cut through the noise.

As Anand Mahindra put it, sometimes even a desire for online attention can become a force for real, lasting good — and Bittu Tabahi is living proof of that.
